2026.01.18 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Posted : Jan-15-2026

Dear Parishioners,

Another Christmas season has just passed, and we now find ourselves in Ordinary Time. There is often excitement and interest associated with certain feasts and seasons of the Church year: Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter. In comparison, “Ordinary Time” might sound dull, uninteresting, and commonplace. But is it really? Ordinary Time, meaning ordered or numbered time, occurs in two segments: from the Monday after the Baptism of the Lord (January 12) until Ash Wednesday (February 18), and from Pentecost Monday (May 25) to the First Sunday of Advent (November 29).

Ordinary Time is also called the season of Sundays, interspersed with a certain number of holy days and special feasts. Ordinary Time allows us to fully celebrate the special character of Sunday, the Lord’s Day, our original feast day.  Sunday was the day early Christians treasured as the day when the Lord rose from the dead. It also came to be associated with the coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. It is a fitting day, then, for Christians to come together as a community to celebrate the Eucharist.  Ordinary Time is simply the way the Church organizes its liturgical year, assigning each Sunday a number and counting weeks sequentially.

May this season help us deepen our commitment to Christ.
