Dear Parishioners,
This weekend we celebrate Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is more than a holiday or a long weekend. Thanksgiving is a sacred time to pause, look back and recognize the countless blessings of God that go unnoticed in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Fundamentally, as human beings, thanksgiving should be a way of life; however, today we live in a world where the sense of entitlement is growing, affecting our relationship with God, with other human beings and with God’s creation.
We read in Psalm 107, “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.” Gratitude, for Christians, is not merely about counting our blessings—it is about acknowledging the Giver of every good gift. Here, I am also reminded of the words of St. Paul in his First Letter to the Thessalonians, chapter 5, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances.” True thanksgiving is lived daily –in prayer, in service and in joy. When we give thanks in all circumstances, we proclaim our trust in God’s goodness and open our hearts to God’s peace.
As we gather around the table with family and friends, we are reminded of the table of the Lord, where our Lord Jesus Christ offers Himself for us. Just as we share food and fellowship, we are called to share God’s love and mercy with those around us, especially the poor, the lonely and the broken-hearted. On behalf of the Parish, I wish you and your families a very Happy Thanksgiving.
